Trump Demands Iran Compensation

Aug. 10 — President Donald Trump said Monday he would demand that Iran pay compensation for “all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded,” responding to Tehran’s demand for compensation over damage caused by U.S. and Israeli attacks.

Trump’s comments came after Iran said over the weekend that it was nearing an agreement with Oman on new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran repeated that the United States must meet several conditions before the strategic waterway is reopened, including compensation, an end to sanctions and an end to military threats.

“It is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also cited the October 2000 bombing of the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole at a port in Yemen as part of his compensation demand against Iran. The FBI, however, has attributed that attack to al Qaeda.

The bombing killed 17 U.S. sailors and wounded more than three dozen others.

Trump also said Tehran should compensate families connected to the thousands of people referenced in anti-government protests in January, which Reuters described as Iran’s worst domestic unrest since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Rights groups say the Iranian government has continued to crack down on opponents during the war.
