An armed civilian followed a teenage gunman into an Oregon elementary school and fatally shot him Thursday after the attacker killed three children and a teacher, according to police.

The shooting occurred October 15 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, where a 16-year-old attacker forced his way into the building by shooting through locked doors.

Police confirmed that three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher were killed. A 7-year-old student and another teacher, 54, were critically injured and transported to St. Charles Medical Center.

The gunman was also killed, bringing the total death toll to five.

Civilian Followed Shooter Into School

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said a community member witnessed the attacker entering Silver Rail Elementary School and pursued him inside.

The civilian confronted the gunman and fatally shot him before officers entered the building.

Authorities have not publicly identified the civilian or confirmed reports that the person was related to a student.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the person's intervention, saying it helped prevent further loss of life.

Investigators have not disclosed details about the civilian's firearm or the circumstances of the confrontation.

Police Arrived Within Minutes

The first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m., when a person in a vehicle outside the school reported that someone with a gun had fired at them.

Within the next minute, dispatchers began receiving additional calls reporting gunfire inside the building.

Police officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m.

Moments later, officers learned that the gunman had been shot. They entered the school and confirmed he was dead.

Authorities said the attacker used a long gun. The Associated Press subsequently reported, citing a law enforcement official, that the weapon was a pump-action shotgun purchased by the teenager's mother.

Police have not publicly established a motive or confirmed whether the attacker previously attended the school.

Three Children and Teacher Killed

Silver Rail Elementary serves kindergarten through fifth grade and enrolls approximately 450 students.

Following the shooting, surviving students were transported to a nearby church where families gathered for reunification.

Bend-La Pine Schools canceled Friday classes, sports and other activities throughout the district.

Thursday evening, hundreds of residents attended a candlelight vigil at Drake Park to mourn the victims.

The identities of the children killed had not been publicly released in the initial reports.

Investigation Continues

Local investigators are working with state and federal authorities to determine how the teenager obtained the firearm, what led to the attack and whether there were warning signs beforehand.

The civilian intervention has also drawn national attention to questions surrounding school security, emergency response and armed individuals acting before police arrive.

However, the investigation remains active, and authorities have not established how many additional casualties, if any, were prevented by the civilian's actions.

For families in Bend, the immediate focus remains on the four victims, the two people hospitalized and the school community recovering from the attack.
