Trump Vows Strong Response to Iran

WASHINGTON, July 29 — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States would hit Iran “very hard” after Iran said it fired ballistic missiles at U.S. military sites in Jordan.

“So it’s our turn,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump said Washington would see whether the two countries could eventually reach an agreement to end the war, “but we’re going to hit them very hard.”

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Tuesday that they fired several ballistic missiles at a U.S. air base and a military center in Jordan.

Separately, the U.S. military said it intercepted multiple ballistic missiles.

Trump also said he had been briefed on a drone hit on a U.S.-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta.

“I’ve been briefed. It’s a little more of the same. But it’s going to be straightening out,” Trump said without providing further details.

Trump was also asked about a Reuters report that Iran was expected to receive an initial shipment from a possible total of up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers.

He said such a development would be surprising.

Earlier this week, Trump said he trusted Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin when they told him their countries would not enter the war on Iran’s behalf.

“Well, that would be surprising. I mean, things like that happen, but that would be surprising,” Trump said when asked about the Reuters report.

“Xi told me very strongly he wouldn’t partake, but he knows I’d be quite disappointed,” Trump added.
