Sweden Signs $4B Warship Deal

STOCKHOLM, Aug. 31 — Sweden signed an order Monday for four frigates from France’s Naval Group in a $4 billion deal aimed at strengthening its military capabilities as European countries increase defense spending.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Stockholm attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Sweden, NATO’s newest member, has accelerated efforts to strengthen its armed forces since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine prompted Stockholm to abandon its longstanding policy of military neutrality.

European governments more broadly have increased defense spending amid pressure from President Donald Trump and concerns about the reliability of future U.S. security support.

“France and Sweden in the European Union and in NATO show that European sovereignty is being built together,” Macron said.

He said Sweden’s purchase “strengthens the industrial and technological basis of European defence at a time when Europeans must take greater responsibility for their own security and consolidate NATO's European pillar.”

Sweden announced in May that it planned to purchase the four vessels from Naval Group. The $4 billion order is expected to triple the Swedish navy’s air-defense capacity.

The frigates will become the largest ships in Sweden’s navy, with the first vessel expected to be delivered in 2030.
