Three people were killed and four others, including a toddler, were wounded Sunday in a shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival, police said.

The shooting occurred at Seattle Center in downtown Seattle at about 6 p.m. local time, according to witnesses cited by the Seattle Times.

One suspect was taken into custody, and police were searching for a second person believed to have been involved, Seattle Police Department Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said at a media briefing Sunday night.

Police believe two people were shooting at each other, Davis said. Officials did not disclose a possible motive.

Local media initially reported two deaths and five injuries. Davis later said one hospitalized person had died, raising the death toll to three. The four remaining people in the hospital were in stable condition.

Davis described the person in custody as a “young person” but declined to provide further details. Police did not have a description of the second suspect.

Officers recovered two guns from the scene. Homicide detectives and members of the department’s gun violence reduction unit were among those investigating.

Police said officers in the area heard gunfire and “responded and addressed one of the shooters.”

Despite the search for a second suspect, Davis said police did not believe there was an ongoing danger to the public.

“Right now, we believe that we have no outstanding threat to the community,” he said. “We do have one suspect that is being interviewed.”

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson called the shooting “an unbelievable tragedy, and a horrific act of violence.”

Wilson said Seattle had experienced three major incidents of gun violence over the previous several days and pointed to the broader problem of gun violence in the city and across the United States.

The investigation remained ongoing.
