Hundreds of Navy reenlistment bonus rates are scheduled to drop Thursday as the service puts its fiscal 2027 Selective Reenlistment Bonus plan fully into effect.
The Navy issued the new bonus chart Sept. 8, but reductions and eliminations were delayed until Oct. 8.
That makes Wednesday, Oct. 7, the final effective reenlistment date for qualifying sailors to receive the previous FY26 rates on bonus levels that are being reduced or eliminated.
A line-by-line comparison of the Navy’s FY26 and FY27 charts by Military Toolkit found 297 rating, specialty and service-zone bonus levels on the new plan.
Of those, 212 are reduced, 16 are eliminated, 22 are newly added, six are increased and 39 remain unchanged.
Two additional levels had mixed changes, with one part of the bonus increasing while another decreased.
The Navy uses Selective Reenlistment Bonuses as a retention tool for sailors in ratings and Navy Enlisted Classification specialties where the service wants to maintain specific manning levels.
The amount a sailor can receive depends on factors including base pay, additional years of obligated service, specialty and which career-service zone the sailor falls into.
Zone A generally covers sailors with 17 months through six years of active service.
Zone B covers six through 10 years.
Zone C covers 10 through 14 years.
That means one Navy job can have several different bonus levels depending on specialty and years of service.
So the 212 reductions do not represent 212 separate Navy ratings or 212 sailors. They represent individual rating, specialty and service-zone combinations on the bonus table.
Some of the changes are substantial.
For Information Systems Technicians, for example, a Zone A bonus for NEC 745A falls from a 3.0 multiple with a $60,000 ceiling to a 2.0 multiple capped at $45,000.
The H00M specialty previously carried a Zone B multiple of 3.5 with a ceiling as high as $75,000. That bonus disappears under the new plan.
Other IT specialties remain eligible but receive smaller multiples or lower ceilings.
Cyber, intelligence, aviation, medical, construction and other communities also have reductions scattered across the new table.
But the changes are not universal cuts.
Some specialties are gaining bonuses or receiving increases, and several high-value retention incentives remain intact.
The comparison identifies 22 newly added bonus levels and six increases alongside the 212 reductions and 16 eliminations.
The Navy says bonus levels can change as retention conditions change.
MyNavy HR describes the Selective Reenlistment Bonus program as a monetary tool used to shape enlisted retention and says award levels are adjusted based on manning needs in specific ratings and specialties.
There is also an important deadline caveat.
A sailor generally cannot simply decide on Oct. 7 to reenlist and automatically lock in the previous rate.
Selective Reenlistment Bonus requests normally must be submitted in advance.
For reductions and eliminations, sailors who already submitted qualifying requests may in some circumstances move their reenlistment date before Oct. 8, provided they meet Navy timing and eligibility requirements.
For eligible sailors whose paperwork is already in place, however, Oct. 7 marks the end of the previous bonus levels.
Starting Oct. 8, the new FY27 rates apply.
