The Marine Corps is offering eligible Marines bonuses of up to $40,000 to join or remain in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve under a new retention and affiliation incentive program published Thursday.
MARADMIN 377/26 took effect upon publication Aug. 20 and is aimed at filling validated Reserve billets and retaining experienced Marines. The program covers certain Marines already serving in the Selected Reserve as well as eligible active-component, Individual Ready Reserve and Individual Mobilization Augmentee Marines willing to affiliate with an SMCR unit.
For Marines in designated critical military occupational specialties, the largest base incentive is $30,000 for a 36-month commitment. A second group of eligible MOSs can receive $25,000 for the same three-year obligation.
Eligible Selected Reserve Marines in those MOS groups can instead receive $10,000 for a 24-month commitment. Corporals and sergeants may qualify for $5,000 for a 12-month commitment under the program.
The list of occupations covers a broad range of specialties. MOSs eligible for the $30,000 tier include reconnaissance Marine 0321, cyberspace warfare operator 1721 and explosive ordnance disposal technician 2336, among others. The $25,000 list includes rifleman 0311, machine gunner 0331, field artillery cannoneer 0811 and numerous aviation, logistics, intelligence and communications specialties.
Some Marines can receive even more based on where they serve. Eligible Marines who agree to spend 36 months at designated Reserve units can receive an additional $5,000 or $10,000 unit kicker.
The Marine Corps caps the combined incentive at $40,000. The kicker can be added to qualifying $25,000 or $30,000 retention or affiliation bonuses, depending on the Marine's MOS and assigned unit.
The new program represents an increase over the Reserve incentive program announced in November 2025. That program offered a maximum $20,000 base bonus for a three-year commitment and a $5,000 kicker at designated units.
The new rules also introduce a $10,000 Reserve Transfer Bonus for certain active-component corporals through staff sergeants who have fewer than 15 years of active service and agree to join the SMCR for 24 months. That transfer bonus cannot be combined with the larger affiliation bonuses or a unit kicker.
Eligibility is not automatic. Marines must hold one of the listed MOSs, meet grade and service requirements and fill or be eligible to fill an appropriate Reserve billet. Marines who received nonjudicial punishment within the previous 12 months are ineligible, as are certain Marines who failed selection for promotion or previously received an affiliation bonus.
Active-duty Marines seeking the three-year affiliation bonus generally must be within one year of their end of active service and have fewer than 20 years of total military service. Marines already serving in the SMCR have separate eligibility requirements tied to their current Reserve service obligations.
The Marine Corps said incentives will be approved in the order requests are received until available bonus allocations and funding limits are reached. The program will remain in effect until it is replaced by new guidance.
