Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon

Aug. 5 — The Israeli military said Wednesday that it had begun targeted strikes in southern Lebanon in response to what it described as a Hezbollah violation.

The strikes came one day after Israel and Lebanon held their latest round of U.S.-facilitated talks in Rome.

Earlier Wednesday, the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for the southern Lebanese village of Mansouri, saying it planned to act against the Iran-backed group in the area. It was Israel’s first online evacuation warning for Lebanon in more than a month.

Israeli forces dropped leaflets over Mansouri in late June telling residents to leave after Israel added the village to a self-declared buffer zone in southern Lebanon, a senior Lebanese military official told Reuters at the time.

Some Lebanese farmers had continued entering the area to reach their homes and fields despite nearby Israeli military operations.

Lebanon and Israel agreed June 26 to a U.S.-brokered security arrangement intended to reduce hostilities along the border.

Israel said, however, that it would maintain a security zone in southern Lebanon to eliminate what it described as the threat posed by Hezbollah.
